Fifty years ago, yesterday, America's first World's Fair
in the post war era, the Century 21 Exposition, closed.
President Kennedy was supposed to preside at the closing
ceremonies, but he begged off at the last minute, claiming
a "severe cold". Everyone was left wondering what that
meant until the next day, when news of the Cuban Missile
Crisis broke. It's interesting that yesterday and today
mark the point when the greatest hopes and the worst fears
of the 20th century (the fears, nuclear war, having been
raised in the Theme Exhibit in the Washington Coliseum)
met face to face. If anything, these two days defined
the second half of the 20th century.
