When I did a big transfer job a few years back for a large publicly-accessible poetry
archive/library, I immediately noticed how much material Yale had put out in years past. I came to
find out that Yale now owns the masters of a once-major publisher of recorded poetry. I mentioned
this to the client, and they asked if I could put them in contact with someone at Yale. The only
person I "knew" there (and only through ARSC) was Richard. He was more than helpful, and a deal was
made whereby a lot of material that had been inaccessible without a visit to New Haven is now
accessible within the confines of the nation's most populous (and population-dense) city, NYC. So, a
New Yorker who loves and studies poetry, and is statistically unlikely to have a car, can now travel
NYC mass transit to the archive and listen to many Yale-owned recordings that were formerly only in
far away New Haven. This is 100% due to Richard's organization and coordination, plus he gave the
archive a very good rate on the transfers and duplication.
I can't think of a better tribute to an audio archivist than to say he made something accessible to
more people than it was before. Plus he was an old-school gentleman.

Leah and I were sad to hear the news. Dick has always been a friend for
the 40 years I've been in ARSC. I often suggested that we hold an ARSC
Conference at Yale but it never happened. And Steve, that is a great
picture -- we need to put it in the newsletter and on the ARSC web site.

Richard was a true friend, and an excellent curator. I met him, back in
1977, when I was nineteen, and was researching recordings made by the
'cellist Emanuel Feuermann. He was polite, knowledgeable, patient,
helpful, friendly and fun. Over the years, my wife Caren and I became
close friends with both him and his wife Mary-Jo. Like many of you, I
mourn him today, but will carry his wonderful essence with me always.

I spent a fascinating day with Richard three years ago at Yale
Janie and I visited with Richard and Mary Jo about 15 years ago when we
were on way to Mystic for vacation. He gave us a tour and then even got
us a
"table down at Morey's" (yep, it's real place.). What a gentle and
always
"giving" soul.
I did a google search and what I consider the perfect image of Richard
popped up. I'll share the link. Tomorrow, in his memory, it will be my
screen
saver. Take a look. Isn't that the Richard we all knew and loved?
