Some cartridges are better than others in this regard. I've found Grados
and Stanton 500s have little ringing.
As far as EQ is concerned, recording at 33-1/3 with RIAA, then bumping
up to 78.25 makes the high frequency rolloff commence just under 5kHz,
which is often good. However, the low frequency turnover is about
1175Hz, which is kind of high. These days I just transfer through a flat
preamp, no EQ, and add the curve in software.
