Good advice, but academic in my case, where at times there are audience question on one channel! I do check each cassette for azimuth, and there are varitions among them, of course... I only combine the channels to find the minimum phasing, as well as checking on an analyzer. This is basic for me! Even one channel (left is usually better) needs to be adjusted accurately for playback!
