Absolute pitch is not necessary in order to obtain the correct playback
speed. Any device that will verify the pitches or key is enough, provided
you know what the original key was. What is far more necessary, in fact
essential, is a sensitivity to speed instability. As someone else observed,
centering is often inadequately done and the resultant "WOW" is an analogue
artifact that is entirely avoidable but fatally compromises the result.
Department of homonymic error: Someone's posting yesterday confused "phase"
(derived from Latin and Greek) with "faze" (derived from Middle English).
Or was it supposed to be a pun?
