My standard practice is to transfer around 0 VU = -20dBFS, using 24-bit
recording. Then I remaster *everything* to 0 VU = -14dBFS after whatever
processing I'm doing. My rationale for that is that I'm mostly
remastering for broadcast, and it's a good idea for program to match
from one item to another. Very few things I've done need more headroom
(An interesting exception was an LP by the folk-rock band Fairport
Convention that I digitized for air; it needed about +17dB of headroom.
I've run into a few 78s that did, too, but only a few.)
