Gary, I agree that your edtf formulation is preferable, and tidier.

Thank you Richard for pointing out the virtue of not using anything in $d in this case unless needed to avoid a conflict. But I question the use of the question mark in 046. The dates themselves aren't questionable-each source appears to be confident in its information. The question appears to be the choice of one or the other, so in 046 the use of a list within square brackets seems to be indicated. As someone else pointed out, there's no requirement that this list consist of consecutive years.

Sue
I think you could in theory give both dates in repeated 046 fields, as uncertain edtf dates:
046 $f 1948? $2 edtf
046 $f 1950? $2 edtf
I don't have access to the RDA Toolkit at home, but I think you could, in theory, add the date to the authorised access point as:
$d 1948 or 1950
Personally, if the access point was unique, I wouldn't apply the Option to add a birth date to it in this circumstance.

Subject: [PCCLIST] how to handle conflicting info on birth dates
Hello, PCC Experts.
We are preparing a NAR for someone for whom we have two books. One book reports the author's birth date as 1948; the other reports it as 1950. We thought that perhaps we should enter two 046 fields, one for each date, and establish the name heading without a date of birth. Is this the correct way to proceed?
Thanks,
Sue
