If it is not obvious, I urge you not to code the gender. It is not mandatory. Your suggestion to use the normal sex associated with the name will only lead to incorrect coding. If there is not a mention of "his works" or some other gender clue in a bio, do not assume or guess.

A new question: how do we determine the sex of a person. May we infer from the forename if we assume it is (usually?) used for one sex or the other? Do we need further evidence, and what might that be? I hesitate to email someone asking: What sex are you?
