Much was made of Mr. Carter being the "world's oldest composer" and I
remember Henry Brant once telling me, with terseness and irritation in his
voice, that he was
"not the world's oldest composer."
So now that Mr. Carter is gone, who would that be? A cursory glance
suggests it might be Henri Dutilleux, born January 22, 1916 in Angers,
Maine-et-Loire in France,
thus being 96 years old, and reportedly in poor health, by the way. The
oldest American might be Jacob Avshalomov, born March 18, 1919 in Tsingtao,
China and thus
93 years of age.
Anyone I might be missing?
