I've just been impressed by one of the finest, most natural sounding orchestral recordings I've come across in a long time. Surprisingly it's on Naxos, (I say surprisingly because I've always heard that their priority is saving money and, of course, passing those savings onto their consumers). The repertoire certainly isn't everybody's cup of tea - "A Carol Symphony and other Christmas Orchestral Favourites", but the sound contains all of the virtues I look for in an orchestral recording - accurate imaging, depth, natural balance and an overall pleasant sound. I wanted to contact the recording engineer, John Timperley, to share my feelings but, sadly, it appears that he died about six years ago. I would like to find out about other projects he's worked on. From what I'm hearing, I would guess that he probably uses a multi-mike set-up, but it doesn't have the flatness that such a pickup often exhibits. Anyway I guess I'll never know.
