I say it's all BLACK MAGIC which we plug and poke at. My wife's laptop some days works beautifully and other days is stuck in molasses or is just stuck (a restart fixes it).

Hi, Tom,
I am using EAC V1.0 beta 3 from 29 August 2011 which is the latest version. I'm running it on a quad-core i7 930 machine with 12 GB of RAM under W7 and my son ran it on a dual-core i7 laptop this summer for the "big box plus" rip. I think his laptop only has 6 GB of RAM and I forget which i7 it is. Both ran fine. Both are 64 bit, his is Home Premium and mine is Professional.
I switch between FreeDB plug-in and the GD3 database plug-in which I think I paid $10 for when the FreeDB one was missing a bunch of track IDs. The Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World" CD that I had at hand was retrieved by all three--no surprise.
The error checking against the database on a per-track basis is a bit of overkill IMHO, but when it does say it agrees, that's great, but quite often I find I have a different version of the same disc.
One interesting aside, I've been doing comparisons between allegedly different versions of discs and the main difference is where the track marks are located. I am fairly convinced that if I can sample-accurately align the content, flip the polarity of one copy and get no output in the DAW for the duration of that clip that (a) it's the same conversion from the analog domain to the digital domain (from analog source or live) AND (b) it is the same mastering effort, therefore, even if the CD claims to be digitally remastered it is not true unless moving the track mark is digitally remastering. So, the slipped track marks may be why the checks don't match.
Cheers,
Richard
