What I've found with my new 7.1 system with two 12" woofers in the left and right repaired speakers and the SACD RCA Living Stereo series I've been purchasing, is that I'm hearing low frequency hum that I'm sure I couldn't hear before. As you said Carl, "a bit of hum", and maybe even the engineers at the original sessions didn't have as wide range playback as we are able to have today. Or maybe they EQ'd it out in earlier renditions. Still, the recordings are such that one doesn't really care, since they're better than anything we've been treated to before. Of course, in my listening room study, there are gentle peaks throughout the room depending on where I'm sitting or standing. Yeah, I even like the initial silence as the first track starts, and you hear the "system" noise come up prior to the music. Maybe I'm weird, but it's always been thrill to hear this kind of thing when I used to go to Hi-Fi demos at the audio shows. You knew you
were about to experience something special.

Nice coincidence - that Levine set is pictured in the Mahler 10 article
published in the new issue of ARCS Journal.

I have that recording as part of Sony's el-cheapo box set of the RCA Levine
Mahlers. Never heard it before. Based on the first movement, it is masterful
in every way. There is a bit of hum and just a trace of hiss audible in the
quiet passages midway through, impressive as there were a LOT of mics open.
The sound can be grainy at times. You wonder how it ended up at 44.1;
probably SRC from back in that day, which may have had significant
artifacts. The mix sounds a lot like other RCA Medinah projects, but without
the congestion during loud parts that afflicted analog sessions.
