Yes. I don't know much about the video interconnect realm, which HDMI
inhabits, but SPDIF is the standard for pro/consumer audio interchange and
there hasn't been a DSD protocol for that until D-over-P, meaning the
transmission of DSD datastream over a PCM-capable link. Bet that either HDMI
or the gear that uses it keeps DSD contained within the hw, to prevent its
escape. Any hunk of wire will transfer the digits, but the
transmission/reception protocols have to support the specific organization
of the data. As with all digital networking, a choice is made whether a
particular data format is supported or not, or the limitations imposed. And
somewhere out there, someone has cracked it and is seeding torrents.
PS Audio does use HDMI cables to send data from their very trick CD
'transport' to their matching DAC, but that is just using the wide-bandwidth
of HDMI's physical standard for a another proprietary use. It's not
compatible with standard HDMI devices. K&K Audio and Wyred 4 Sound do
support PS Audio's format. I'm told it makes for superior CD playback, but
haven't heard a demo.

Gents,
I might be missing something, but all new Sony Blu-Ray players have an
option for DSD Out via the HDMI jack. You can also select DSD 2-channel or
DSD multi.
Perhaps the thought is that it is not possible to capture the DSD via HDMI??
