@Saasha: To help with your second point, I'd like to implement is the
use of Iconize <http://pooliestudios.com/projects/iconize/> in our
finding aids. It adds icons next to download links, indicating whether
they are sound, video, document, etc., based on the file extension. We
already us it on our website and it's a very nice feature. I also use
javascript to add the file size to the link, so the user can decide to
view online or download. (Who wants to open a 75 MB PDF in a browser?)
