HI Anne-Marie,
I can share how I have done tables and relationships in a more
conventional database (I use Filemaker Pro). You are welcome to have
my database for free, I give it out freely, so we can chat off-list
about that--my email is [log in to unmask] (You would have
to have a copy of FMP installed on a computer to view/use it, but you
can probably dig that up for free or use a trial version). My database
has 2 xslt that work with it, one that exports flattened Core 4 (Excel
is still the lingua franca for a lot of folks) and another that
exports Core 4 validating xml. Having the database would give you the
ER diagram, and you could see how the data entry interface works. I do
use part/whole relationships in my work records, and the related work
record exports with my xml export.
In my experience, collection records have yet to take off with
folks--it is a bit chicken and egg, since no delivery systems have
really been developed that use them. As far as I know, Luna and
CONTENTdm do have "compound" records that allow for part/whole
relationships for items in a set, or pages in a book, but that is not
the same as the collection record. I do have the ability to create
collection records, and I can send you an xml sample of one I did for
that historic lantern slide set, but as a practical manner there is no
utility for actual linking yet, either in sharing records or in
delivery systems. (I would love to hear if anyone is using them, or if
any tool can use them at this point in time). I work (among others)
for Archivision (an architectural image vendor) and so I have exported
and manipulated that data for a lot of clients using different
delivery products. As a practical matter, I have coded certain records
as works for now but used "collection" in the title (i.e. "Door
Hardware Collection"), so I can find those at a later date and convert
them to actual collection records when anyone has a use for them. In
terms of a collection ("Western Americana Collection") that might be
internal to a museum, like a department, that can be put in "location
note" or in a local field. A donor credit line ("Gift of Paul Mellon")
may also be put in "location note."
Cheers
Susan
