As the bean counters started taking over the management of record
companies from "record men" in the late-60s-early 70s, and conglomerates
like water companies and jet engine manufacturers started taking over
and merging record companies into little corners of their multinational
behemoths, it became evident that the record companies did not really
understand collectors. When records become "product" and the bean
counters make catalog decisions by numbers rather than titles, artists,
and cultural importance, the fanatical collectors became marginalized.
And when the industry's lobbying organization, the RIAA, started suing
their customers, it became evident that the entire industry did not
understand their customers. Not only do they delete records by their
catalog number, they delete their customers by IP numbers.
