If you mount ordinary cone drive units on a similar size panel, you get
out-of-phase sound from the back just as in the Quads. I suppose the
chassis of the cone drivers might reduce the level slightly, but
basically I see no difference in the two cases.
Wharfedale made an infinite baffle speaker in direct imitation of the
original Quad (1950s) electrostatics, but using cones. My recollection
(from 1968) is that the sound was good.
