Hmmm... "Audiophooles", you say? Back in the eighties I did a research
project on this topic (generally known as Absolute Polarity) and published
the results in a book called *The Wood Effect*. Upon an extensive survey of
literature -- JAES, JASA, IEEE Transactions on Audio, Wireless World,
Audio, Audio Amateur, Recording engineer/producer and more -- I found that
all but one study and article confirmed the distinct audibility of
polarity. Moreover it's what's called in the trade a "monaural phase
effect", so the phenomenon certainly applies to the questioner's situation.
