Indeed most instrumentalists, vocalist deal with this issue of some form of absolute phase and assymetrical waveforms.

I don't know if I can hear absolute polarity (I've never checked - I guess I'll have to add it to my "to do" list), but if some people can, then I feel sorry for all the drummers out there that have been listening to their kick drum "sucking" (no pun intended - OK, well maybe) while playing their kit live, then hearing it "blow" in the recording.
