Please find attached some proposed changes to the Preservation Level
entity that have been discussed by the PREMIS Editorial Committee
following an initial suggestion by Eld Zierau and subsequent comments by
others.
The main changes are:
- Addition of the optional preservationLevelType to the PreservationLevel
entity to allow the functions that are expected to be applied to an object
to be defined. For example this can be used to distinguish between bit
preservation of an object and other forms of preservation.
- Clarification that the existing optional preservationLevelRole should
define the context in which a set of preservation options is applicable.
For example, this can be used to distinguish between the optimum
preservation level and the achievable preservation level.
In both cases the allowed values are expected to be taken from a local
controlled vocabulary but no attempt has been made to enforce a global
vocabulary so the PREMIS schema will not enforce this.
The changes have been highlighted in the attached document.
Feedback is welcome.
