Regarding my original post...
I didn't make clear -- these are lyrics to a completely different unheard song. Originally listed as a poem, scanning the document revealed a handwritten note by Dula as a "ballad" titled "A Soldier's Farwell" written in Lynchburg, VA in 1862. In 1866, Dula was convicted of killing Laura Foster and subsequently hung.
At the least, if we approach this the "right" way, could make a great story. We have a few new ideas, especially since Merlefest is held here.
