My first memory of Elwood McKee was at the 1977 Conference in West
Orange. During a discussion about cataloging I might have mentioned my
wish that instead of having done it on a typewriter, I could have done
the cataloging of the Northwestern Radio Archive by computer. But the
option with our mainframe was to bring the collection to the computer.
I was just wishing for a small keypunch machine that could be brought to
the collection. Whether it was in response to this I am not sure, but
I DO remember him describing the new developments that were making it
possible to have a computer capable of doing all sorts of cataloging and
multiple sortings and it would be small enough to fit on our desk! I
remember all of us looking at him as if he had three heads. It was the
first time I heard of a desktop computer. But he was involved in the
concept of the AAA project of bringing a camera to the collections so
that the label films could then be brought to the computer for entry.
A gracious gentleman, he and Joan lived in the same Rockville, Maryland
apartment building as Gerry Gibson, and it was wonderful visiting those
two couples.

When I joined ARSC in the 19802s Elwood was one of the people who
welcomed me to the group! He was indeed a very nice man and very
professional as well. I am sorry to hear he is no longer with us.

Very sad to hear of Elwood's passing - he was one of the key persons
behind the creation of the Rigler-Deutsch catalog, not to mention one of
the
nicest, calmest and professional I was privileged to work with in ARSC
in the 70s and 80s.
Thanks for the opportunity to remember him.
