Which also means, of course, that none of those artists will be getting any benefit, financial or otherwise, from any of those things (live recordings, broadcasts, etc.) which they COULD have gotten benefit from during their lifetimes.

This hits the nail. Already I have more recordings by my favorite classical artists than were ever available in their lifetimes, out of print or (broadcasts) never commercially available, swapping and trading on the Net. Nobody cares and nothing will ever stop it. Meanwhile the record labels try to sell a million of something rather than 10,000 each of a hundred somethings, and they're going out of business.
