To be accurate, Macero was part of the Columbia music assembly line, strictly governed by union agreements - and *nobody* but engineers could touch recording equipment. Engineers received instructions from the 'officer' side, in this case from a Music Editor, who was responsible to assembling a session's accepted takes and inserts, determined by the producer, into a master. If that master were three-track, it would be mixed, and often fiddled with (cf. Macero's comments) to make a two-track, stereo LP cutting tape.
