Dear colleagues,
I have a few questions about 775/776 fields.
1. How do your system index 775/776 fields? My school use III system. I found that the 775/776 fields can only index |t or |s fields (Uniform title or title field), even with further information of detailed OCLC or DLC number. The problem with this is that if the title part in 775/776 is the same as the 245, it isn't very helpful to have 775/776. It will eventually lead to the title search list and users will need to browse down to look for the exact version that they are looking for.
2. if your system can also only index title fields. How do you handle the linking issue when 775/776 has the same title as the main 245. Usually the use of 775/776 is optional. 775 will not be used if the current edition is the same as the previous edition. But 776 links different formats. Seems CONSER has quit using uniform title for electronic title with qualifier (Online). In most cases, the electronic version would have the same title with the print version. So before we may link 2 different formats with:
245 Title A
776 |s Title A (Online)
130 Title A (Online)
245 Title A
Now since there is no 130 needed for the different manifestations. How should we code to connect them?
