According to the 2nd edition of PHP, the first such US patent (for 'puzzle
records') was issued to Edgar Berliner (Emile's son) in 1908-1909.
Since the first Berliner Puzzle Plate occurred in England in 1898, there
may well have been an earlier patent (there). It is possible, I suppose,
that the interleaving concept was not "novel" enough to pass muster with the
US Examiners.
