Let's not forget the love of the Scottish Bagpipes that play at patriotic events and elsewhere.

I have no kids, but I've had similarly positive musical impressions of many young people today. Thanks to the internet, they can check out a wide variety of music easily, and many do.
I'm glad to hear that at least some band programs are thriving. There are a lot of outlets like this for young players that don't get a lot of coverage, but that doesn't mean they have no impact. Every summer, drum and bugle corps performances draw big crowds around the country, and the finals are seen in HD in theaters in many areas. Playing standards are exceptionally high, and the choice of material is eclectic. Check out the setlists (under "Show Summary 1971-2013") at the Wikipedia entry for the Blue Devils Drums and Bugle Corps. You'll see everything from Chick Corea (who played in a drum and bugle group when he was young) to Stravinsky.

Sorry, Tom, your inner old-codger is showing...I have a teenager. He and his cohort are real music hounds, playing instruments both acoustic and electric, perpetually starting bands, going to live concerts, and collecting music in various formats. At his public high school there are two very active music ensembles, one of them regularly plays jazz festivals in Europe.
