Marge and John, thanks for the help.

John, many times the first created records are badly cataloged and with least holding libraries (such as the case I gave in the email) so that more copy/paste work needs to be done to them. But you are right that theoretically they are the initial input and need to be updated to fully cataloged records based on the OCLC principles.

Marge, you are right that search can set up more limits/parameters in the search. But browse sometimes is more convenient. I wish the OCLC can add more options on the display list setup, such as language of cataloging agency and format types.

Use Search instead of Browse in OCLC Connexion Client or Brower. Search has the options 'Apply language of cataloging agency' and 'Format'. There are additional options to further limit results. You can also combine searches (e.g. name and title, name, title and publisher, etc.) if a title search retrieves too many results.

if you have an ISBN try searching by ISBN instead of title browse. You can use Apply language of cataloging agency, Format, and other options to further narrow your results.

The OCLC website has documentation on searching, online tutorials, and listservs for OCLC users. OCLC-CAT is a great listserv to use to post questions about OCLC. You can sign up for OCLC listservs on their website.

  It's time to consider restructuring OCLC to "shadow" all the format variants behind single "master" records representing the intellectual content being cataloged.

  If we are to assume that all the duplicates will eventually be merged, what you do locally hardly matters.

  Since I can edit the OCLC master records themselves, I chose the 1st record input (or lowest OCLC # in the case of records input on the same day). I then "copy-and-past" from the other records as needed to make that 1st master record the most complete and the others recognizable as duplicates to OCLC's matching software.
