Hi Vicky,
I don't know a lot about the MP2T format. Is it the case that the video and audio aspects within the AV material would be bitstream information as defined by PREMIS? If so the case, you could have the file level information for the MP2T which would look like your TIFF example below, then you can have format information for each bitstream too.
File
<premis:format>
<premis:formatDesignation>
<premis:formatName>MP2T</premis:formatName>
<premis:formatVersion>1</premis:formatVersion>
</premis:formatDesignation>

<premis:formatRegistryName>PRONOM</premis:formatRegistryName>

<premis:formatRegistryName>PRONOM</premis:formatRegistryName>
<premis:formatRegistryKey>fmt/134</premis:formatRegistryKey>
<premis:formatRegistryRole>specification</premis:formatRegistryRole>
</premis:formatRegistry>
</premis:format>
Bitstream 2
<premis:format>
<premis:formatDesignation>
<premis:formatName>Mpeg 2</premis:formatName>
<premis:formatVersion>1</premis:formatVersion>
</premis:formatDesignation>
<premis:formatRegistry>
<premis:formatRegistryName>PRONOM</premis:formatRegistryName>
<premis:formatRegistryKey>x-fmt/386</premis:formatRegistryKey>
<premis:formatRegistryRole>specification</premis:formatRegistryRole>
</premis:formatRegistry>
</premis:format>
We don't currently write information to the bitstream level at National Library of New Zealand. In this specific case (video) we would extract the format information of the components as technical properties and store it that way (if a metadata extractor existed for the format).
Always happy to discuss further -- we struggle (among other things!) with bitstream/filestream here.
Best from Wellington,
Pete

Subject: [PIG] Specifying format(s) for audiovisual material
Dear All,
I’m working on METS for audiovisual material and was wondering what other establishments are doing with respect to noting format of item within PREMIS format element. Images were straight forward with only one PREMIS format element e.g.
<premis:format>
<premis:formatDesignation>
<premis:formatName>TIFF</premis:formatName>
<premis:formatVersion>5.0</premis:formatVersion>
</premis:formatDesignation>
<premis:formatRegistry>
<premis:formatRegistryName>PRONOM</premis:formatRegistryName>
<premis:formatRegistryKey>fmt/9</premis:formatRegistryKey>
<premis:formatRegistryRole>specification</premis:formatRegistryRole>
</premis:formatRegistry>
</premis:format>
However with audiovisual material a file can be made up of several tracks e.g. MP2T (Container) has 1 video track (MPEG Version 2 Main@Main) and 3 audio tracks (MPEG Version 1 Layer 2). In these types of instances are you just including PREMIS format element and link to format registry just for the container file (MP2T) or are you repeating PREMIS format elements for tracks within the container? I would be really interested to hear how others are handling these types of file formats. Also if anyone is using the second suggestion and would be willing to share an example METS document I would be extremely grateful.
Many thanks,
Vicky
