Don't have answer to the question, but the following may be of interest:
The Songs that Fought the War: Popular Music and the Home Front, 1939-1945 By John Bush Jones
p.185
..."In 1951 in the City of Brotherly Love, the prestigious
Philadelphia Inquirer sponsored a "Smokes for Yanks Funs,." To encourage
cash contributions for sending cigarettes to GIs, Harry Filler and
Frank Capano wrote the fund's official theme song, "Smokes for Yanks"
(Philadelphia: Tin Pan Alley, 1941). The lyrics put servicemen having
their cigarettes on a par with defense industries: "Keep your eye on plane
production,/And we need those ships and tanks,'But remember, keep
'em smokin', /Don't forget those smokes for Yanks."
There have been a number of compilations of 78 on CD from the UK and Germany which have
smoking related theme - can't find a reference at the moment.
Was the Leffredo recording issued commercially, or a lacquer intended for local airplay ???
Best wishes, Thomas.
