For what it's worth: I called Lars Edegran , who works for George Buck and I believe is a trad jazz musician, too, almost 3 years ago after a reliable New Orleans researcher / archivist informed me that Edegran and Buck had finally physically obtained from John Steiner's estate the Paramount metal masters he had. I wanted to know if there were any Blue Jay Singers in there for a project I was working on. Edegran told me that they were still "in a box in his living room" and "he did not know what the titles were." He went on to say that he wanted to reissue them in some way as a set together. That was in early 2011. If I read van der Tuuk's book correctly, then these are the 50 metal masters from the New York Recording Laboratories' inventory? So perhaps there could still be a some kind of quality reissue in the future? Has anyone else heard this?

800 titles? This is what I meant about an accumulation as opposed to a collection. Have fun listening to all the nearly-inaudible deck as well as the nearly-inaudible gems. Not enough time on earth ...
I do agree that this is a very appropriate thing for a library to own, especially if they can "circulate" the digital files as opposed to fragile optical media which will be unplayable in a few years. A whole catalog of a record label will serve many tastes, by design, so it's appropriate for non-accumulators to pick and choose according to their tastes.
