I went to an antique mall today, and found a couple of 78s,one of them is a record pressed by Gramophone Company/EMI in Middlesex, for the US Armed Forces. The label reads "Special Service Division H.Q. SOS ETOUSA".I can sort of figure out ETO means European Theater of Operations, but I son't know what the SOS means.I know nothing about these records. Can someone tell me what they were issued for?
This was clearly record two of a two record set,and they did not have the first record that I could see.The booth had piles of 78s,and I may have missed it.I plan to go back and look again.
What I have here is the Trio in G for violin, oboe, and cello,by John A Riley. All of the third movement, and part of the second movement.I can find an obituary online from the Hartford Courant, and a couple of entries in old (Eastman?) Rochester Reviews from the 60s about Mr.Riley, but very little else. Why would the Armed Forces be issuing a record of somebody this obscure?
The trio is made up of John A Riley cello,Stefan Krayk violin, and Constantin Epp oboe.
So what,if anything, can anybody tell me.
