Great review Steve!
Earlier releases of Woody's Library of Congress sessions have had poor sound quality, having been made from tapes that were probably 3 to 4 generations removed from the original lacquer discs. The Lomax discs were actually recorded in a Washington, DC radio studio and they are generally in excellent condition with a full and bright quality that lets Woody sound like the young man that he was. The original sequence and flow of the sessions are also preserved, with much unheard talk and many previously unreleased peformances. For instance, Woody's "They Laid Jesus Christ in his Grave," which was on earlier releases of these sessions, now follows his previously unreleased version of "Jesse James," the song that inspired it.
