For multiple manuscripts bound together there will be one InstanceContainer with the relevant Annotation - may be only Holdings.
Each Instance of a manuscript have a link to the Work - and the Work links to Creator oand Subject.

What if there is no publisher? The case of multiple manuscripts bound together by a collector is common.

Subject: [BIBFRAME] Holdings in BIBFRAME - The Instance to Work 1:1 rule
(was part of "[BIBFRAME] BIBFRAME Annotation Model Draft 2" and "[BIBFRAME] BIBFRAME Holdings as Annotation")
Since Juha Hakala's email (of 18 September 2013) several aspects of holdings have been discussed. This a second contribution covering another issue than mail from yesterday.
One problem is when one physical unit contains several different texts, which relates to different creative works. The discussion has be about how Holdings as Annotation works in this situation.
First: we have as least three different use cases:
. A physical book with more than one text without any connection (example: three research papers published of a research institute bundle together just as the next three papers written by faculty members without a common title)
. A physical book with more than one text with connection (example: five research papers about an author describing different aspects of her books with a introduction published with a common title)
. A binding in one library of more than one text without any connection (example: five short stories published individually, but bundled together of the library in one binding)
A proposal for a solution: take the fact that an Instance not necessarily only relate to one Work - and implement the possibility for an Instance to be part of another Instance (may be called an InstanceContainer). This will give a solution for the three examples above and will solve the discussed problem how to relate the individual holding to these kinds of Instance.
. A physical book with more than one text without any connection: the three research papers are represented by three individual Instances with relation to three different Works. These three Instances are part of one InstanceContainer with relation to Annotations as Holding, Cover Art and Publisher.
. A physical book with more than one text with connection: the four research papers are represented by four individual Instances with relation tofour different Works. Together with the introduction the four papers as an InstanceContainer are related to a Work describing the composition. The same InstanceContainer are related to Annotations as Holding, Cover Art and Publisher.
. A binding in one library of more than one text without any connection: the five short stories are represented by five individual Instances with relation to five different Works. These five Instances are part of one InstanceContainer with relation to Annotations as Holding, Cover Art and Publisher. The InstanceContainer have no relation to a Work.
There will be borderline cases between the first and second case. I don't see that as a problem.
With the drafted InstanceContainer, the raised problem about Holdings to these kinds of compound Instances are solved.
Best regards,
Leif Andresen
