The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position as Catalog Librarian.
Position Description
The Catalog Librarian position is an entry-level, tenure-track faculty position that requires knowledge of current and emerging best practices in the cataloging of monographic materials. The position catalogs monographic materials in multiple formats, including digital content, supervises cataloging paraprofessionals, manages projects in cataloging and collection management, and creates and/or maintains Web pages. Research and service activities in keeping with a tenure-track faculty position in an academic environment are expected. The position reports to the Head of General Collections Cataloging.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Catalog Librarian participates in coordination of the bibliographic control and maintenance of monographic materials; performs original and complex edit cataloging for materials in multiple formats; participates in the cataloging of Digital Collections materials; plans and directs collection management projects; supervises, trains, and evaluates cataloging staff members; contributes to and documents creation of policies and best practices related to cataloging of monographic materials; and participates in maintenance of the Web presence of the Bibliographic Services department. Applicants should show potential for scholarly research in an academic environment.
Qualifications and Experience
Required: Earned MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited library and information science program, with coursework in beginning and advanced cataloging; Knowledge of current and emerging national cataloging practices and standards; Knowledge of digital library/digital collections organization, practices and content management systems, including Dublin Core metadata; Working knowledge of HTML, Web pages and content management systems; High level of proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications; Strong written and oral communication skills; Indicators of abilities to engage in scholarly research.
Preferred: One year of experience working in a cataloging environment or relevant experience such as a cataloging practicum (recent MLS/MLIS graduates will be considered). Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated library system, CONTENTdm. Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to manage staff.
Appointment and Rank
This is a tenure-track faculty position to be hired at the rank of assistant professor. Professional activity and service are expected. Salary: $40,000.

The position is based in Cook Library on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi.
