Amazon's prices bounce up and down all the time. I'm guessing it's based on computerized sales yield algorithms that allow frequent updates depending on ongoing sales volume with little, if any, human intervention.
Perhaps the higher price means they're selling more sets at the lower price (for some definition of lower) than they initially expected? Or perhaps Third Man records is selling more sets so they'll be giving less stock to Amazon, thus Amazon is raising the price to match a constrained supply?
One of things Amazon does well is their Pre-Order Price Guarantee. If you Pre-Order you'll get the price at the lowest price they offer it for at any point between the time you place your order and the time it's shipped to you.
I just got a copy of Robert Gordon's new "Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion" (on first perusal it looks excellent). When first ordered it was $22.63, the day it shipped it was $22.50, but at some point in between (probably cause pre-sales weren't so good) the price had dropped to $18.00, and I was refunded the $4.50 difference.
$4.50 ain't much, but a greater than 20% discount sure would be on a $500 item. Then again, you can get it for $400 direct from Jack White, so surprised Amazon's price is still so high.
Probably have to pay shipping from Third Man, though. And that box does look heavy.
