Hello ARSClisters,
Please join or renew your membership in the Association for Recorded Sound Collections for 2014!
You'll want to be an ARSC member in good standing when the next issue of the ARSC Journal comes out. It will feature a particularly interesting article by David Lewis on the fate of the remarkable collection of Cincinnati composer, organist and choir leader J. Walter DeVaux (1892-1952). Part discographical essay and part confession, this article documents a collection that got away and raises important questions for our community to consider. What is worth preserving and who decides? Where does an outsider go with a valuable collection and what happens to collections that are insufficiently valued? Also in the next issue of the ARSC Journal, the debate continues over preservation practices for open reel tapes with a letter to the editor from Richard Hess in response to Charles Richardson's article in the Fall 2013 ARSC Journal on a non-baking cure for sticky shed tapes.
I hope you'll agree that ARSC is unique in bringing together private individuals and institutional professionals-everyone with a serious interest in recorded sound-to address issues and concerns relating to historic sound recordings and cultural heritage. Please support the association and this community by becoming an ARSC member today.
