Dear Tamara,
As you suspected, your culprit appears indeed not to be your
stylesheet but one that came with the platform (the 'default'
stylesheet you sent me subsequently). If you are responsible for its
maintenance (or want to become responsible), we can take that off
list. It has some weaknesses that make it prone to issues like this.
However, I think you'll also find that if you remove the unused
'subtitle' element in your source EAD, your problem will go away. The
clumsy XSLT may then be able to go back to doing what it was tested
for, which happens to look okay. (But note that I haven't attempted
this solution.)
If that works, we can be content that this bug goes dormant again (and
wait for the next one).
If it doesn't, and you don't want to fix the XSLT, maybe you could
name yourself as the sponsor and work around the bug that way.
Cheers, Wendell
