Current cataloging and metadata professionals, as well as library and
information science (LIS) educators are facing rapid change: in technology,
standards, and practices. Questions abound on how we can keep up and adapt
to these changes, in the workforce and in the classroom. The Biennial
Educators Meeting titled "What Skills are Needed for the Next Generation
Cataloger/Metadata Professional" on January 24, 2014 from 1:00-4:00pm in
Philadelphia, PA hopes to tackle these questions and concerns head-on and
discuss solutions and partnerships that can benefit current and upcoming
cataloging and metadata professionals.
Speakers include:
Daniel Joudrey, Associate Professor and Ryan McGinnis, Graduate Student,
Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College,
speaking on "Current research on LIS programs: their benefits and
limitations, and ways they can address present and future needs of students"
Autumn Falkner, Cataloger, Michigan State University, speaking on
"Experiences and challenges of a recent LIS graduate now employed as a
library practitioner"
Bobby Bothmann, Metadata & Emerging Technologies Librarian, Minnesota State
University, Mankato, speaking on "An adjunct professor’s perspectives on the
skills LIS students need, and how practitioners and educators can
collaborate to provide them"
Shana McDanold, Head, Metadata Services, Georgetown University, speaking on
"The importance of teaching cataloging theory and conceptual models of
discovery systems in LIS programs"
There will be question and answer sessions after each speaker's
presentation, as well as breakout sessions for participants to delve further
into cataloging education issues and concerns.
