Hi, David,

I have been helping two former CBC producers go through a bunch of tapes
from their collections. One of the producers has been in touch with the
CBC archivists and it seems that there were only two tapes that were in
what I ended up with which the CBC did not have and a few others of
interest, so we're giving the CBC those tapes and I digitized a couple
of them for the producers to have.

I have an email from the CBC that I may dispose of the tapes in any way
I wish as long as I'm respectful of CBC's underlying copyright in them.
They are about 35-40 years old.

So, in theory, I could hold onto them for another 10-15 years until they
are in PD, though didn't the latest revision to the Copyright Act
establish a longer PD period in Canada as well to be more in line with
the Europeans? That's not going to happen. The producers don't want them
any more. I'm keeping the reels and boxes, which I can use from time to
time.

The reason I ended up with them is they migrated to the Calgary area
with one of the former producers and on a personal trip I was driving
through Calgary on my way home from Alaska in 2007. We were able to
jettison some extra spare tires at that point and make enough room for
the tapes--barely. So they've been in my house for 6.5 years! It's
amazing how one collects things in this business!

In 2007, the producers thought that none of these were in the CBC
archives, so we all thought it made sense for me to bring them back to
Toronto, but it was later established that almost all were in the archives.

In actuality, we doubt any of these were the masters because, as I
understand it, different airings of the same show all had separate
copies made and these appear to be the copies that were aired. The
labels say route to the producer after air.

Cheers,

Richard
