I am currently dealing with someone who had a fire in their building. The
fire was in another part of the building and their facility was just subject
to heavy smoke damage. The smoke was sufficient that running a finger over
exposed surfaces for a few inches results in a visible, oily, black residue.
I can decontaminate the tapes but not the machinery. The facility had
engineering consultants come in and examine their playback machines. The
engineers strongly recommended that the machines be decontaminated or
replaced as there was significant smoke contamination in the equipment
(smoke residue can be extremely damaging to electronic parts and circuit
boards over time). The consultants, however, did not have any
recommendations for services that did AV machine decontamination (the
facility has both audio and video equipment).
Does anyone on the list know of a company that does AV machine
I used to deal with a division of Siemans that did this kind of work but the
plant doing the decontamination closed down (I think they might still offer
the service but the division I was working with relocated to Germany at
least 10 years ago).
Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. The need is not
just for "standard" machine cleaning but someone who can decontaminate
