Agreed 100 percent.
If the tape contains splices that is sticking in the tension servo
arms then some extremely violent behavior will happen that
can stretch/destroy the tape in an instant.
The sticking tape moves the servo arms violently and that
translates to extreme servo errors that tells the supply/takeup
reels to compensate with very large motor forces that can
snap the tape instantly.
Replay here of unknown master tapes are always on the Studer
A820 winding at 0.5 meter/second to be absolutely sure that I
can catch every splice to stop and inspect for gummy bleed or
sticking splicing tape outside of the tape which is a sure reciepe
for large uncontrolled tension servo errors on the Ampex ATR 100.
The Studer A820 is ALWAYS very gentle on any tape no matter
the history of the tape.
