>Many reasons to not like FedEx. …
Earlier this year I Bought a copy of the Paramount box set from Third Man Records. The box was shipped via FedEx, and arrived with a hole punched in it (it looked like a forklift had driven into it), which poked a hole in the oak presentation box that houses the set.
I called FedEx to submit a claim, and was told that they only deal with the shipper, and I would have to get Third Man to contact them. This worried me, since the web page where I ordered the set had an explicit notice stating that the buyer accepted all responsibility for shipping-related damages. However, when I managed to reach Third Man's shipping receiver on the phone, she was very kind and helpful. They exchanged the set for me, even though FedEx denied their damage claim. Kudos to Third Man, thumbs down to FedEx.
I avoid FedEx and only use UPS when I have to. All large shippers have their problems.. I believe the damage liability is stronger if you have the shipper package your item. Another option for larger delicate items is to strap it on a pallet and consign it to a trucking company. At any rate, protective packaging is key. When I bought my SP-15 Turntable with extra-large plinth, The seller got a carpenter friend to build him a plywood box to his dimensions. Just imagine the worst thing that could happen to the box, and do what you can to mitigate it.
