We have been using United Parcel Service for longer than I can remember
without EVER having a single lost package or any claim of damages. UPS does
not deliver to P.O. Box addresses. ALL packages are automatically insured
for up to $ 100 of value. If you declare a higher value, there is a fee for
increased insurance.
I have compared some of the UPS prices with USPS and found the post office
less costly without exception. However, our library clients are happy with
the UPS delivery service so we have never considered a change.
FedEx ground service is a hair less costly than UPS but the FedEx daily pick
up service seems more haphazard than UPS. We can count on UPS to make our
daily pick up within a one half hour time window. As a shipper, the
reliability of UPS has an added value.

Subject: Re: [ARSCLIST] FedEx vs UPS vs USPS
The FedEx Express workers are employees. The FedGround workers are not
employees but are hired as independent contractors. They have to purchase
the FedEx trucks they use, supply their own health benefits, insurance, etc.
It's quasi illegal in my book and they have been sued over it, but the
government seems to look the other way, and I don't see any union going
after them. It was the one thing that made me want to try UPS as my default
carrier, but I had so many problems with UPS that I just switched back. I'd
love to use the USPS, but they are so mired in bureaucracy that they simply
are not able to supply the services I need. And when you compare prices for
the same services, there's no difference in price, except its harder to get
them from USPS.
