Mac, it's hard to know where to begin to answer this, but I'll give you
an analogy that might make sense to you. In your database you have a
MARC record. In a library system, there may be different displays:
short, medium, full. You do not have to store different records for
short, medium, full -- they all come from the MARC record. Analogously,
you can have bibliographic data in your database and each profile is
like a display: it is made up of a selection of "fields" from your
database. There's no "affording one version" as each version is simply a
request from the database for a certain set of fields.
My guess is that you could serve a wider variety of clients better with
such a design.
