It was my impression that the earlier Columbia Special Products issues were
simply reissues of deleted Columbia titles, with either an "A" or a "C"
added to their catalog number. Some used original covers, but some used a
generical Blue cover or a black cover.
The P14000 series which came out in the 1970s seemed to all be electronic
stereo issues of very early mono Masterworks titles, althoug there were some
slightly later gems such as the New Music String Quartet titles. Some of the
supposedly identical cassettes (all non-dolby, I guess to save licensing
fees) actually had the wrong music on one of the sides.
I do remember that if you happened upon a decent pressing you could usually
get pretty good sound by summing the channels. It was not a very creative or
time-intensive phony stereo that was created.
