My experience with pseudo ORTF pick ups is very poor mono - not comb filtering, just a loss of sources in mono which are clear in stereo. Another problem with this technique is a heavy left/right nature to the sound. I heard a recording of a solo viola centre stage recorded with this system and if I closed my eyes, I heard the speakers as distinct sound sources, not a phantom viola image in the centre like you would hear with a coincident mike - either MS or XY. I've seen this system used in Europe with a baffle between the mikes, (I think it was actually an LP). This would certainly cut down on sounds getting into the wrong mike but there would be a lot of extreme left/right to the sound. ORTF sounds really good on headsets because the distance between the mikes simulates to a certain extent the distance between your ears.
