Have you checked out the Sound Field meter in Izotope’s Insight metering plugin (comes free with RX Advanced)? I used to used StereoTools too but prefer using Insight now.

It was somewhat common practice to record a series of tones at once and then splice them into the individual album tapes. He went back and started over. I had given Alan a good CD-R copy of a pristine vinyl copy I had found and he indicated that was not what he thought the album sounded like, so I'm happy to say he pretty much matched the LP sound. This was about a dozen years ago.
