I think you need to pick one tape, standardize on it, and have the
machine adjusted for it. You mentioned that you're hearing a lot of
hiss; some hiss is normal in analog tape recording, but if your recorder
isn't adjusted to the particular tape you're using, it may have more
hiss than you want.
