It's like the old "78-33=45 RPM" story that rears its ugly head
every couple years. I've heard people swear vehemently that
the "Eeeeevil Sarnoff" and his hatred of Peter Goldmark (and
Edwin Armstrong, and Philo Farnsworth...) was the only reason
for the 45. These myths fill a kind of tribal instinct and desire to
see history as personality-driven, because that's a very emotionally
intuitive animal-brain way of organizing events. So the myths
just keep getting repeated and repeated.
